Victoria’s Higher Education Students
This section provides some statistical information on enrolments in Victoria's public universities, looking in particular at the following questions:
Where are they from?
How
many are studying part-time or off-campus?
What
are they studying?
How old are they?
How
many pay full fees?
What
proportion of the population go to university?
What
kinds of differences are there between genders?
Unless otherwise stated, the data provided include enrolments in the
interstate and international campuses and teaching locations of Victorian
universities.
Some other things to remember when using these data are that:
- Only higher education enrolments are included in these statistics, even if a university is also a TAFE provider.
- Students from Victoria who have enrolled in universities interstate or overseas are not included.
- Where possible, data have been sourced from the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science & Training’s (DEST) 2004 full year statistics, available from their website.
- Remaining data have been sourced from the Victorian Department of Education & Training’s (DET) records, which relate only to the first half year records for 2004. These data are available here (Excel - 122Kb).
- Because DEST reports multi-state institutions (i.e. the Australian Catholic University) separately, the 12,700 students studying at ACU are not included in state-wide totals for data sourced from DEST. This amounts to an omission of around 4,000 students for Victoria.
