Victoria's Public Universities

The data contained in this site relates to Victoria's public universities, listed below. If the university provides statistics on its own website, a link is provided.

Age of student

This is the age of a student on 30 June in the year being analysed.

Postgraduate student

Students are considered to be postgraduate students if they are enrolled in courses that can only be undertaken following completion of an undergraduate course.

Non-Award Course

A non-award course is a program of study which:

EFTSU (Equivalent Fulltime Student Unit)

A measure of student load indicating the proportion of the workload which would be applicable to a standard program for a student undertaking a full year of study in a given course.

External enrolments

An 'external enrolment' means that the university has made special arrangements whereby the student need not attend the institution for regular contact with a staff member. These students might communicate with their university in person (less frequently than required for standard enrolments), by correspondence or online. Some institutions refer to this as 'distance education', though the student will not necessarily live far from the institution. Other modes of attendance include multi-modal and internal.

First half year statistics

These are based on the first submission of the year concerned (census date of 31 March in 2004). Institutions are only required to provide semester 1 and summer semester enrolments at this time. Most institutions enrol students on a yearly basis and often provide full year information in this first submission. While late and midyear enrolments will not be included in these initial figures, they nonetheless provide an indication of student numbers in the year concerned. In 2004 for example, the first half year records contained around 224,000 enrolments at Victorian institutions (excluding the multi-state Australian Catholic University) while the updated full year statistics contained 242,000 enrolments.

Full year statistics

These include information from second submission of the year concerned (census date of 31 August in 2004) and relate to the full year data.

Internal enrolments

All units of study for which the student is enrolled are undertaken through attendance at the institution on a regular basis. Internal enrolments also include students undertaking higher degree courses who attend the institution on an agreed schedule for the purposes of supervision and/or instruction. Other modes of attendance include multi-modal and external.

Multi-modal enrolments

At least one unit of study is undertaken on an internal mode of attendance and at least one unit of study is undertaken on an external mode of attendance. Other modes of attendance include internal and external.

Part-time enrolments

Student load (EFTSU) aggregated for all of the courses being undertaken by the student in a year is less than 0.75.

Participation rate

The proportion of a population that is enrolled in higher education courses is referred to here as the 'participation rate'. It is derived by comparing population estimates for an area with the number of enrolments from students whose permanent home address is from that area.

Permanent home address

This is the address provided by students for non-semester correspondence.  Students are also asked to provide a ‘semester address’, which may or may not be the same as the permanent home address.

Regions

The address given by the enrolling student as their 'permanent home address' is used to group enrolments into geographic regions, based on the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) 2004 as indicated in the table below.
