Where are they from?
There were around 242,000 students enrolled at Victoria's universities in 2004 (Figure 1). This makes Victoria the second largest provider of higher education in Australia, with over 25% of Australia’s 0.95 million university students studying at a Victorian institution.
Around 65% of students studying at Victorian institutions came from Victoria. Others were from interstate and overseas. (Figure 2).

Students from Victoria
Around 158,000 students studying at Victorian institutions came from Victoria, i.e. their permanent home address was within Victoria (DEST, All Students, Table 22).
More than 80% of these Victorian students were from Melbourne, which amounted to around 55% of students overall (Figure 2).
Interestingly, a large proportion (44%) of students with permanent home addresses in Melbourne attended either Melbourne or Monash universities, while around 45% of students from other areas of Victoria attended either Deakin or La Trobe universities (Figure 3).

Students from overseas
With roughly the same number of international students as NSW (just under 70,000), Victoria had the highest proportion of overseas students in Australia in 2004 (DEST, All Students Table 22; see also Figure 1 ). Almost half of these students attended either Monash or RMIT universities, while The University of Ballarat had the highest proportion of overseas students of any Victorian university (Figure 4).

…and interstate students
An additional 13,000 students (approx) had interstate permanent home addresses (DEST, All Students, Table 22), although just over half of these students were studying externally, i.e. off-campus. Deakin University accounted for around a third of interstate enrolments (Figure 5).
